Uncover Mosta: History, Culture, and Malta’s Famous Rotunda

Mosta is one of Malta’s most recognisable towns, thanks to its landmark – the Rotunda of Mosta.

Beyond its famous dome, Mosta offers a charming blend of history, local life, and hidden corners waiting to be explored. Step into Mosta and you’ll quickly realise why it holds a special place in Malta’s story.

The Rotunda of Mosta

Built in the 19th century, the Rotunda (also known as the Mosta Dome) is a masterpiece of architecture and engineering. Inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, its circular design and towering structure make it one of Malta’s proudest monuments. The interior is decorated elaborately with paintings and gold details throughout.

The church is also known for its remarkable history during World War II. In 1942, a bomb pierced the dome during an air raid while hundreds of people were attending Mass. The bomb failed to explode and is perceived as a miracle. So much so, that a replica of the unexploded bomb is on display in the church.

Local Life in the Heart of Malta

Mosta’s square features more than just the rotunda. There are surrounding streets filled with coffee shops, traditional bakeries and shops of various kinds. A Maltese delicacy which is lovely to snack on while walking around the streets of Mosta is the pastizz, found at one of the pastizzerias in the centre.

Hidden Gems and Surroundings

While the Dome is often perceived as the main feature in Mosta, just outside the main centre you’ll find picturesque valleys and walking trails that reveal Malta’s natural beauty. Wied il-Għasel (Valley of Honey) is a favourite among hikers and photographers alike, thanks to its dramatic cliffs and surrounding greenery.
