Santa Marija: An Anticipated Summer Feast in Malta
If you’ve ever been in Malta around the middle of August, you’ve likely heard of Santa Marija.
Taking place every year on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary (Santa Marija in Maltese) is one of Malta’s biggest and most widely celebrated religious feasts. It’s much more than a church event, it’s a national holiday celebrated in many localities across Malta and Gozo.
What Makes Santa Marija So Special?
Apart from the day being celebrated as a national holiday, many take the entire week off. Companies will close for summer shutdown for the week so people can enjoy some time-off during the warmest times of the year.
Every village has their own version of the feast, each adding a local flair to the celebrations. From early morning masses to late-night fireworks, every detail is planned months in advance.
Expect:
Streets draped in colourful decorations
Bands playing traditional music through the village core
Food stalls serving local favourites like mqaret and imqarrun il-forn
Fireworks that light up the sky well into the night
The village of Mosta is among the most popular places to experience Santa Marija, thanks to its iconic rotunda and grand displays. Over in Gozo, Victoria hosts a week long celebration that blends religious tradition with street celebrations, concerts, and cultural shows.
A Feast with Deep Roots
The Feast of the Assumption has religious significance tied to Catholic tradition. But over the years, it’s also taken on cultural importance, bringing families, friends, and entire communities together in celebration.
Even during wartime, Santa Marija held meaning. In August 1942, just as Malta was reaching a critical point during World War II, a convoy of ships arrived in Grand Harbour bringing supplies which were much needed. Many locals saw it as a miracle, a Santa Marija miracle, a story still remembered today. In fact, a siren is rang during the feast in remembrance of the occasion were supplies for those on the island had arrived through Maltese waters.
